LKBEN11537: Howto get the version of a file with powershell


Symptom

You need the version information of a certain file.

Cause

Sometimes needed.

Solution

To get all the information about a file you can use the following powershell command:

Get-Item c:\windows\notepad.exe|Select-Object *

To only find the version you can use:

(Get-Item c:\windows\notepad.exe).VersionInfo

This will show something like this:

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> (Get-Item c:\windows\notepad.exe).VersionInfo

ProductVersion   FileVersion      FileName
--------------   -----------      --------
10.0.22000.1     10.0.22000.1 ... C:\windows\notepad.exe

To only pick the fileversion or productversion you can use:

(Get-Item c:\windows\notepad.exe).VersionInfo.Fileversion

(Get-Item c:\windows\notepad.exe).VersionInfo.ProductVersion
