LKBEN11605: How to install MS fonts like Arial, Times New Roman on Ubuntu 20.04

Symptom

You need to write a document in Arial.

Cause

This is by design.

Solution

Check your version of Ubuntu with

lsb_release -a

This should say:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS
Release:        20.04
Codename:       focal

To install the microsoft fonts on your system, you use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository multiverse

sudo apt update

sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

sudo fc-cache -f -v

I needed to run "fc-cache -f -v" as user too!

The fonts should be available now.

You can also check the installation with:

fc-match Arial

Have fun.
